Catherine Umlah (Teacher)

Mrs. Kenneth E. (Catherine) Umlah, retired this year after 20 years teaching in Duval County Schools, died Friday after a long illness. She taught Latin at Dupont High School from 1954 until 1965 and at Wolfson High School from the time of its opening until her retirement. She was Chairman of the Foreign Languages Department at Wolfson. Mrs. Umlah, of 715 Kesimir Drive, was born in Colquitt, Ga., Nov. 11, 1907. Her family moved to Florida and she was educated in Florida Schools. She graduated from Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) in 1929 with a B.A. Degree in Latin. In 1934, Mrs. Umlah received an M.S. Degree in Latin at University of North Carolina. In 1949, she received an M.S. Degree in Psychology at Florida State University and was a member of the faculty there for two years in the Guidance and Counseling Department. Mrs. Umlah was a membre of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She was a member of the National Education Association, Duval County Teachers Association, the American Classical Association, Classical Association of Florida, and the American Classical League. Mrs. Umlah was a past president of the Florida Classical Association. During World War II, Mrs. Umlah was a member of the Women's Naval Officier Trainig Program. After her discharge, she served in administrative positions in Washington at the Office of Strategic Services and later at the Veterans Administration. In 1955, Mrs. Umlah returned to Florida to resume her teaching career. In 1965, Mrs. Umlah was selected Star Teacher of the State of Florida. She was [?] a member of the state Committee for the Selection of Foreign Language Textbooks. Mrs. Umlah also served on many County and State Committees in the field of education. Survivors include her husband, Mr. Kenneth E. Umlah, two sisters-in-law, Mrs. C. D. Williams, Jr., of Jacksonville, and Mrs. Ethel L. Rooney of Belmont, Mass. and nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Hardage & Sons, Estes-Kraus Arlington Funeral Home, 5540 Arlington Road, until 9:00 p.m. Sunday. The body will be sent to J.A. Cullery and Sons Funeral Home in Tallahassee for viewing. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the graveside on Oakland Cemetery in Tallahassee. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of the Funeral Home.
