John's obituary was published in The St. Augustine Record on January 10, 2010. "Sgt. John A. "Shark" Sharkey, 66, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on Jan. 6, 2010, at Roberts Care Center in Palatka. "John was born in Jacksonville and had lived there for most of his life. He had been a resident of St. Augustine since 2002. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War and had served as a deputy with the Duval County Sheriff's Office for 37.5 years. He was a sergeant for 36 years and retired in 2003. Sergeant Sharkey was well-known, respected and admired by his fellow officers at the Sheriff's Office. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the American Legion, Jacksonville Bass Club and was a Mason. "He is survived by his wife, Carol V. Sharkey of St. Augustine; his daughter, Candy Dodds and her husband Don and his granddaughter, Heidi Dodds, all of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Jean Sharkey, a brother, Tom Sharkey, and a sister, Joy Broadhurst." My path crossed John's before and after Terry Parker. As toddlers, John and I lived two blocks apart in our respective grandparents' Springfield homes while our fathers were in the service. For a few years, John, Mike Burke and I worked in the same area of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. After he retired I missed John's quick, dry wit guaranteed to lighten tense moments.
