Merrill was so smart! He was so far above me that I was actually a little scared of him. He taught Mr. Powell's chemistry class along with Richard Oberdofer most of the time....so smart, so talented.
I can still hear Mrs Cruthfield saying Roddy Lee 47, Muuurrelll Shore off the top of the curve. He was smart, funny and I liked him very much. I think of him often.
SHORE Dr. George Merrill Shore, 58, a native of Jacksonville, went home to continue his eternal life with Jesus on December 30, 2003. He was a member of Deermeadows Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He was valedictorian of Landon High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Emory University and a Medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He completed his internship and residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, TX. His professional affiliations included the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, College of American Pathologists, American Association of Blood Banks, American Society of Microbiology, and many state and local societies. He practiced clinical pathology at St. Vincent's Medical Center for 21 years. Dr. Shore is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Jeremy and Robert; his daughter, Rebecca Dolan and her husband, James; granddaughter, Kayley Dolan; brother, Charles Shore; and many relatives. Funeral services will b e held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2004 at Deermeadows Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 4th from 5 to 7 p.m. at HARDAGE-GIDDENS MANDARIN FUNERAL HOME, 11801 San Jose Blvd. Memorial donations may be made to Deermeadows Baptist Church or the charity of choice. Here's Merrill's death date. I remembered he died on my birthday but couldn't remember the year. I visited him one day when I was at St. Vincent's visiting someone. We had a chance to chuckle over his classic response during elementary school at Hendricks, when we boys were asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. Merrill said, "an eye, ear, nose, and throat doctor." A good friend and a gentle man.
You could have no better friend than Merrill. He even managed to visit me up here marooned in Hampton Roads, when I felt like an outcast. His appearance made the sun come out.
