Merrill was so smart!  He was so far above me that I was actually a little scared of him.  He taught Mr. Powell's chemistry class along with Richard Oberdofer most of the time....so smart, so talented.

I can still hear Mrs Cruthfield saying Roddy Lee 47, Muuurrelll Shore off the top of the curve. He was smart, funny and I liked him very much. I think of him often.

Here's Merrill's death date. I remembered he died on my birthday but couldn't remember the year. I visited him one day when I was at St. Vincent's visiting someone. We had a chance to chuckle over his classic response during elementary school at Hendricks, when we boys were asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. Merrill said, "an eye, ear, nose, and throat doctor."  A good friend and a gentle man.

You could have no better friend than Merrill.  He even managed to visit me up here marooned in Hampton Roads, when I felt like an outcast.  His appearance made the sun come out.

I truly miss him.
