I never met Paulette, but she had such an impact on my life. I remember as a student at Burlington High school riding the city bus as a freshman and seeing her "missing" person's poster - and seeing the photo of her. Not long after my mother and stepfather announced we were moving to Richmond and I knew this is where she had disappeared.
As an adult I have spent a large amount of time figuring out what I wanted to do with my education and life. I am in college part time and my biggest goal after completing my Masters in Counseling is to work in the prison system keeping sex offenders of all kinds behind bars.
I will always keep Paulette in my thoughts as I move towards this dream and passion that I have, perhaps I can keep her in my memory and honor her with this goal.
Paulette was my best friend. I will never forget the day she disappeared or the day she was found. Mostly, I will never forget the kind spirit and huge heart she had. She was the best friend anyone could ever ask for. She was funny, smart, a great artist, shy until she got to know you...she was an absolute Angel taken too early in life. I will never forget her laugh. She will never be forgotten. My children know of her. What happened to her serves as an important lesson for all of us, especially those of us with children. Her story must always be told. If it saves just one child, it was worth the few minutes it took to tell it, don't you think.
Paulette and I were very good friends. I still have a letter that she wrote me so long ago. It still saddens me to this day that she died the way she did. She was a vibrant girl and cared about her family and friends. One thing about Paulette is that she would notice that you were not having a good day at school and try to comfort you and make you laugh.
