Janet R Ernst (Shirey)

Janet Reynard Shirey was born June 29, 1943, in Kalamazoo, Mich. Upon graduation from high school in Kalamazoo, she attended Drake University, The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and The Colburn School. In 1963 she moved to New York City to work in magazine publishing, eventually achieving the position of senior research associate for the managing editor of Time Magazine. In 1971 her intrepid nature led her to Wyoming, where she met her husband, Andrew Shirey. Janet and Drew moved to Chicago in 1972, where she worked for the research team of the renowned pediatric cardiologist Edgar Newfeld. In 1974 the couple moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where they lived until 1982. An avid runner, Janet helped organize the Pikes Peak Marathon for several years. Her 200-plus-miles per month training regimen eventually led her to take first place in her age group in the race.
