In Memory

Gary Lambert

Gary Lambert served as our Student Body President and was a very avid runner, he competed multiple times in the Boston Marathon and he loved to laugh and had a dry, sarcastic wit. Those who knew him were always smiling. He did some crazy stuff, but almost all of it was motivated by Aaron Leishman, Troy Thomas, Scott Rhees, Shane Whitaker, and others ...Gary was actually very shy and reserved by nature.

After High School he shocked some people (but not me) and attended BYU and then began to serve a mission (Brazil, and then California) but Gary began to battle clinical depression. He was honorably released from his mission and returned to BYU where he was put on medication to control his condition. He lived at his Uncle's house to save money and was doing really well...so well that he really wanted to get back into running and do some more marathons, specifically the Boston again.

He tried training for a while but the medication for the depression controlled his heart rate and made it very difficult to train...so Gary stopped his meds to allow him to train...after a short while, the waves of depression returned and overwhelmed him.

He described in his journal that it was like a "beast, attacking without provoke...I never know when it will attack again and overwhelm me." In one of these moments, and full of frustration and depression, feeling that he would never be able to live a normal life, Gary sadly took his own life.

He did it near to the Provo temple, a place he loved and used to run around and near as part of his training because he desired so much the peace found there. Maybe that's why he chose that spot. Anyway, we were all there at his funeral and we all still miss him very much and look forward to seeing him again, to see him laugh and tell stories about all the old days and rides in his "kit car"... the Lebaron 66.

I miss you Gary, May God bless and keep you until we meet again,

From Jeff Kinard

Died in February of 1991.

Thanks for your comments Jeff. I have some really nice memories of Gary and some not so nice. Playing Star Wars at his house was a highlight as Gary lived just around the corner from me. The not so fond memory was when Gary took me on my first 10 mile run. Wow, that was painful. Gary had a big heart and a wonderful family. I look forward to seeing him again!
