Eugene (Gene) Fassi passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday evening, March 18, 2025, after a year-long battle with a terminal illness.

His parents, Ray and Lena Fassi, married in 1940. Gene was born two years later, on 4/4/42. His father grew up in Fairfax, and his mother was raised on a produce farm that is now AE Kent School.

After Gene was born, the little family moved to a dairy farm in Merced that they operated until the end of WWll.

Returning to Marin in 1947, they established a wholesale beer distribution company named R.J. Fassi Distributing. Gene worked there in his younger years until his parents retired from the business in 1977.

Gene then managed several local liquor stores for the next 10 years, at which point he found his real passion as a manager of the Western Sports Shop in San Rafael. He worked there for over 30 years and made many friends along the way. He also ran a book business called Sam Fario Books for 40 years.

Gene was an encyclopedia of fly fishing, fly tying, and hunting in Northern California. He hosted many fly fishing shows and some of the greats in the fly fishing world, including Lefty Kreh, Dave Whitlock, Dan Blanton, Lani Waller, Russell Chantham, and Andre’ Puyans. ~ Carlo Bongio

He attended Marin Catholic High School and graduated in 1960. During those years, he met his wife-to-be, Joan Schunk, at her Home Football game, where she performed as a majorette at Redwood High School. They have been married for 63 years.

Gene was an avid fly fisherman, loved his old bluegill ponds, and enjoyed bird hunting with his partner Steve and his faithful bird dog, Tobers.

Gene is survived by his wife Joan, children Denise and John (Tammy) Fassi, and grandchildren Branden, Chadd, Jessica, Aaron, John Jr., and Jacob.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and all-around great guy.
