Graduation 1959

I remember the Spring of 1959. It seems like it rained every day for weeks. If I am not mistaken some of our classmates had to cross flood waters in a boat to get to graduation at the Keota School Auditorium on May 12, 1959.

I remember it rained really hard during the ceremony itself. I drove across the low water dam on Cache creek between Cowlington and Twilight Corner on the way to graduation. It had rained so hard that when I returned home to Cowlington that same creek was so high that my car flooded out and water was running in one door and out the other through the floorboard of the car.

I took my suit, shirt and tie off and climbed out of the car, raised the hood and with a handerchief dried the inside of the distributor. The car started and I eased across the creek. I did not stop to put my clothes on, but instead drove home in my skivies. Can you imagine the scene at the house, when I tried to explain why I came home from graduation carrying my clothes across my arm nearly in the buff.
