I knew Calvanor long before we got to East, though not very well. I remember he had a great sense of humor, a wicked jump shot and played the trumpet. even now, I see him in my mind's eye on the basketball court, a fierce competitor who loved the game. Gone way too soon.

Calvin "Bug" Rice was my Brother in several ways. We were in the Cadets of America under Moe Lucas at the Patterson Ave. YMCA. We shared a lot of time together as young boys growing up on the tough streets of Winston-Salem. He lived in Kimberly Projects and I lived in the Cleveland Ave. Projects and then Dreamland in East Winston. We were together at Atkins High in 10th Grade and then to East Forsyth. We were in the High "Y" together during those years. We played countless games of basketball. Clyde is right; Bug had a wicked game! He was in the 'Diplomats' and I was in the 'Dictators' Social Clubs. Next it was off to NC A&T together in 1973. In 1974, we pledged the Bloody Mu Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity at A&T together. I was #3 and he was #6 on the Line called "Space Odyssey Seven. Our Junior year at A&T Rice and I along with our other Linemate, Walter Brinkley shared an apartment together in Greensboro. I was honored in 2005 to return to Winston-Salem to conduct the funeral services for Rice. I loved him then and still do. He had a decent heart and would do anything for a friend. His 'friendship was essential to my soul'. My Brother. My Friend.
