Violet Daniel ((Teacher))

Violet Hoffman Daniel, 87, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Violet was born in Burlington in 1920, to Arthur Gurley Hoffman and Katie Evelena Hoffman. After graduating from Elon College in 1940, she began her teaching career at Elon and taught there until the end of World War II in 1945. After her marriage and the birth of two sons, she resumed her teaching career and retired from the Forsyth County school system after more than thirty years of service - teaching mathematics at Walkertown High School and East Forsyth High School, and coordinating the introduction of the metric system into County school system curricula. She continued to support Elon throughout her life and in 2003 Elon University dedicated the Violet Hoffman Daniel Commons building in her honor. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54 years, McRobert Taylor Daniel; and three brothers, Howard Wentworth Hoffman, Adrian Wendel Hoffman, and Thomas Ervin Hoffman. She is survived by her sister Ursula Elizabeth Pleasant, of Elon; son David Taylor Daniel and wife Patricia, of Pittsburgh, PA; and son Samuel Hoffman Daniel and wife Lucy, of Asheville.
