Walter Black
East Forsyth's Walter Black was one of the top athletes in Forsyth County in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
He attended North Carolina on a prestigious Morehead Scholarship — which he won after signing a football scholarship with the Tar Heels.
He lettered three seasons as a defensive back and has the claim to fame of intercepting Dan Marino, who was then at Pitt and went on to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL.
Black, an information-technology consultant now living in Kernersville, stays active in athletics coaching youth football and basketball. But, he said, his six-year stint in the Army means more to him than anything he has accomplished.
"I loved it, and I miss it every day," Black said.
