Mary Vest (Powers)

Jim received $30,000 ROTC scholarship at Vanderbilt University. Graduated in 1982 with a BA cum laudé in Clinical Psychology and then received full scholarship for graduate school in the PhD Clinical Psychology program at Vandy where he worked with brain-injured patients. He decided to switch gears before completing his PhD and took an MA (ABD). He went to the University of Tennessee College of Law and worked in the Legal Aid Clinic helping mentally ill and brain-injured clients get diverted out of the system. He was to graduate in the first week of May, 1988. He was killed in a single car accident on January 28th, 1988. The College of Law granted his widow, Mary Vest Powers (DBHS 78) and his two children, Sarah Elizabeth and James L Powers IV (née Matthew) with his J.D. graduation diploma at what would’ve been his graduation day. The College of Law now annually awards The James L Powers,III Memorial Award for Clinic Excellence.

Jim and Mary married on August 11,1979. They had their two children. Sarah is now married and has two children, Rowan Jackson Parker and Dylan McKenna Parker. They would have been the light of his life.
