I really wish he had grown old with us . . .

Joe was such a good guy. Our senior year at the end of the Spring Choral Concert, I couldn't stop crying. Joe came up on stage, hugged my kneck and kept telling me what a great time we all were going to have after graduation. He disappeared for a few minutes only to return with a copy of the school newspaper that had a picture of Lonnie Carruth, Billie Spruill, and myself in Lil' Abner. He joked around until the tears finally ended with lots of smiles.

Joe called me a few days before my wedding to tell me that he wouldn't be able to come home for it; but, when I walked down the aisle after the ceremony, I looked up and saw Joe. What a wonderful surprise to make an already special day ever more special. I will always have fond memories of him.

"Joseph Hagan Bentley passed on January 12, 1977."  He came to Davidson College. This information about him was in the Davidson Memoriam for the Class of '68 on the Alumni website. The other Davidson grads from Kinston may know more.

Joe Bentley was a great guy.   The two of us went to Jr.-Sr. prom together.   He always told me he loved my smile.  However,  one of my fond memories of him is that he was always smiling.   I saw Joe in Atlanta sometime around 73' or 74' at an event......he was just as friendly as ever.   I'm grateful that I was able to catch up with him.....didn't know he was living in Atlanta, too.   He died way too young, and I miss him whenever we have another reunion.    Billie
