Brenda,

The legacy of Sherman's greatness will continue. A history for all times. May you and the family know the plans God have for you. The power of Love is for an appointed time and season, and often refined at moments like these. Faith, Hope, and Love be your guide through this day and forevermore. Continue to remember flowers fad, and grass withers, but God's amazing grace brings peace in the mist of tests and trails. I do appreciate seeing ya'll at the class reunions. May God's peace and love keep your heart established and rooted at all times. Remember God said, "He will never leave you, nor forsake you." Blessings, Joseph (Skeet) Murphy

My heart is breaking for the family of Sherman.  It is so painful to imagine the loss.  Sherman was a special and unique person who was unforgettable!  I remember our Chorus teacher at KHS Mrs. Epps, telling us that "the good die young".   That has been proven true with the loss of Sherman.

My thoughts and prayers to you, Brenda, and the entire family.

Love,

Caroline

Sherman Johnson's family and friends, sorry for your loss. Haven't seen Sherman since graduation but I always wanted to dribble a basketball like him, man he could dribble. Prayers for the family.

My heart is heavy, but I am so proud and grateful for the life lived and the example Sherman set by our dear brother and classmate. A life of integrity, love for family and one of strong faith. Although KHS '79 is scattered all over the US and world, we remain closely connected. So when one of us is hurting all of us feel the pain and grief. Stay strong my sisters, Brenda and Grenda and the entire Johnson family. Rely on your faith, family and friends to sustain you as you transition without the physical presence of our dear brother. Hold on to the memories for they soon will overcome the pain.

Love y'all...

Our hearts and prayers go out to you Brenda and Johnson family. I will always remember Sherman as a fiercely competitive teammate.  The kind of person that you wanted on your team who was tenacious.  I am so glad I was able to connect with him during the 35th High School Reunion.  I was able to thank him for bailing me out of almost losing a Durham Sun Holiday Tournament game with my late game turnover.  He was able to draw a charge and to  sink 2 free throws with 1 second left to seal the win.  We have no words for the sadness we feel and the friend that we all will miss terribly. We love you all.  Wade Cox and family

My memory of Sherman Johnson was as a naturally skilled basketball player and all around nice guy. He married one of the nicest girls from our class (Brenda Grimes) after high school, and they were truly made for each other. I am tremendously saddened to learn of Sherman's passing, and I would like to express my deepest condolences to Brenda and all of the Johnson family.

My prayers go out to Brenda and the entire Johnson and Grimes Families.  I first found out when my Mother texted me last Sunday.  When she texted me a second time to see if I had received the information, my response to her was "Yes I received it but I haven't been able to stop crying."  Part of it was I reflected on how awesome of a brother Sherman was.  The man was always a class act, intelligent, witty, friendly, competitive, and just plain fun to be around.  Part of it was my empathy for the situation.  You see I have three daughters.  I began to reflect how devastated and difficult that would've been on my wife and daughters had I been the one called home by our Heavenly Father.  Not only that, I thought about the Scriptures where it says "rejoice with those who rejoice and  we should carry/share one another's burdens."  Finally, I thought about the close bond and the love we in the Class of 79 have for each other.  It is a genuine love that is indescribable, with no limits nor boundaries.  We loved Sherman.  It wasn't because he was the star basketball player in high school, but because of the man of integrity that he was.

I'm so glad Sherman was able to attend the 35th reunion and mingle with us.  He was just as fun and mild-mannered then as he was in high school.  My prayers go out to Brenda and know that we love you and are here for you.  Same holds true for Grenda and the children.  I know that Sherman's legacy will delve far into the future by what he has deposited in the children.  Carry on the Johnson legacy.  We his classmates of Kinston High Class of 1979 are a better class and are better individuals because of Sherman Lee Johnson.  For that my brother I thank you.  Rest in Heavenly peace!
