Dr. Daniel Arthur Hoagland, 54, of Lebanon, a family physician at Sweet Home Family Medicine, died Monday in an accident at a working ranch in Utah. He was there on vacation with his family.

Daniel was born in Bakersfield, Calif., to Robert Merlin and Carol Ardalee Elledge Hoagland. He graduated from La Canada High School in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., in 1971, and then attained his bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Pomona College in Pomona, Calif., in 1975. He went on to the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1979.

Following a three-year residency at UCLA Medical Center, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for five years. He served at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas and in England, rising to the rank of major.

After his discharge, Daniel joined the Scripps Clinic in Rancho San Diego, Calif., in 1987 as a clinic physician. He moved to Cottage Grove in 1999 and joined Creswell Family Practice. In 2007 Daniel moved to the mid-valley and joined Sweet Home Family Medicine.

Daniel married Linnea Lagerquist in 1976. Together, they had two daughters, Karen and Erika. The couple later divorced, and in 1994 he married Elizabeth Ann Kull, who is known by her friends as Ann.

Away from the office Daniel loved to play the piano and trumpet. He also enjoyed raising dogs and horses with Ann, hiking, hunting for waterfalls, reading, traveling and spending time with his family. He was known as a warm-hearted person with a dry sense of humor.

Daniel is survived by his wife, Ann; daughters Karen of Lebanon and Erika of San Diego, Calif.; stepson David Sygrove of Creswell; grandchildren David Paul Jr. and Hayley Sygrove; mother Carol Ardalee Hoagland of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; brothers Jim Hoagland of Arroyo Grande and Paul Hoagland of Placerville, Calif.; and sister Kathy Goodwin of Auburn, Wash.

A celebration of life will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Health Career Training Center at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 N. Santiam Highway. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Daniel's name to SafeHaven Humane Society, P.O. Box 2018, Albany, OR 97321; and Friends of Bark Park, in care of Dog Obedience Academy, 605 Main St., Lebanon, OR 97355.
