Pete drowned June 25, 1985 at the Queen City Lake in LaFayette. Whenever you saw Pete he always had a smile on his face. He was such a nice guy and everyone liked him.
I remember Pete well. I was in drafting class with him. Although I was not in the core group of friends that he hung out with, I considered him a true friend. I was shocked to hear about him drowning that summer. I always looked forward to seeing him in drafting because he was fun to be around, and always made me laugh. I remember that he introduced me to Motley Crue, and I am still a fan of some of their music today because of Pete. I still have the paper that was published featuring him and a student from Gordon Lee high school, Mark Klemann, that died in a car accident about 2 months before Pete. It was the football section of the Walker County Messenger and that edition was dedicated to the memory of Pete and Mark, as they were both football players.
I get that paper out every now and then and just think about Pete, and the fun we had in drafting. I am looking at it right now as I type this. No matter how much time passes by, I will never forget him.
Who could ever forget your trademark red bandanna around your leg? I' ll never forget the last words you spoke to me when you left school that day, your last at LHS. And I recall so well what I was doing when learning of your death..."Armstrong" !!!
I had known Pete since elementary school and was deeply saddened by his sudden loss. If I'm not mistaken, he didn't just drown. He drowned while saving his brother or cousin who had gotten pulled on to the drain at Queen City Lake. He was able to free them but was so exhausted that he himself became caught He gave his life so that someone else might live. That's just the type of person he was and I've always felt it was important to remember him that way. Pete was very intelligent and I believe he could have done almost anything he set his mind to had his life not been cut far too short. He is buried in LaFayette Cemetery not far from another of our classmates Marie Bentley.
