Services will be Sunday for Gary Herbert Bentley, who died Saturday at his home In Ben Lomond after a short illness. He was 55. Mr. Bentley was born in Granite City, [Illinois], and moved as a youth to California, where he lived in the San Francisco Bay Area.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1961 and served for four years. In 1968 he moved to Santa Cruz and worked in Boulder Creek at the Santa Cruz Lumber Co. He joined the Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office in 1971. He retired as a lieutenant in 1997.

Mr. Bentley was a member of the Felton Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years, the Santa Cruz Sheriffs Pistol Team, and was past master of San Lorenzo Valley Lodge No. 718, which later became Santa Cruz/San Lorenzo Lodge No. 718. He also was a member of Burlingame Lodge No. 400.

He enjoyed many outdoor activities, including fishing, duck hunting and trips to Alaska, Canada and Baja, Mexico. He was a regular participant in the Jeepers Jamboree.

Mr. Bentley is survived by his wife 29 years, Carol L Bentley of Ben Lomond; daughter Christina M. Bentley of Scotts Valley; mother and step-father Eileen and Bill Niemi; brothers Glenn Bentley of Portland, Ore. and Gregg Bentley of Gresham, Ore. and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

His father, Herbert L Bentley. died in 1968. Contributions are preferred to the Felton Volunteer Firefighters Association, 131 Kirby, Felton, CA 95018; or the Santa Cruz County Peace Officer Association, P.O. Box 1312, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.
