Clark Boyden Howland died peacefully with a smile on his face Sunday, April 4, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was born in August 1943 at the Randolph Field Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas.

From the beginning, he was devoted to his family and was proud to have been an eagle Scout and a U.S. Navy veteran. Clark graduated in 1967 with a B.S. degree in biology, earned his teaching credential and master''s degree all from from Cal Poly. He taught at Shell Beach Elementary for 34 years. A friend and fellow staff member described him as a cross between Grizzly Adams and Jacques Cousteau. Clark was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He loved to barbecue for friends, family and fundraisers. He had a deep love of nature, both on land and sea, which he shared with his wife and children, as well as his many students. Clark was known for his many great stories. He contributed to the community by helping to preserve the Dana Adobe, was a past board member of the County Historical Society and the Estero Bay Surf Club, and helped out with scouting, coaching and the PTA. His family wishes to thank all the angels (you know who you are) who helped Clark on his difficult final journey.

A private family memorial will be held. Donations can be made to the local Alzheimer''s Association or a charity of your choice. In Clark's memory, step outside, enjoy the beauty of nature and hug the people you love.
