Survived By: He is survived by his sister, Nancy (Peter) Rutsch of Moraga, Ca., a niece Tina Rutsch (Dave), two nephews, Jeff Rutsch (Victoria) and Doug, and a great-nephew, Benjamin.

David R. Sandberg was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He was raised in Lafayette. By his early 20's, he had climbed Mt. Whitney and the Matterhorn. After earning his B.S. degree (Math) from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he served as a naval officer on diesel submarines (USS Greenfish, USS Threadfin). In 1975, he was in a serious automobile accident, and was in a coma for about two weeks. He worked diligently to go far beyond anyone's expectations, recovering significantly. He earned Master's Degrees in Psychology (San Francisco State) and Library Science (University of Washington), and wrote a book of poetry entitled Poems Written in the Stairwell to communicate the highs and lows of his journey to recover from brain damage. He loved to sail, learn about exploration in the Northwest, spend time with friends, and good food. He lived in the Seattle area from the early 90's.
