Here is an in-house tribute from the San Juan School District
"We warmly remember and celebrate R. Chris Westphal Jr., PhD, former director of Accountability and Organizational Evaluation in San Juan, who passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010. Chris touched many of our lives during his 11+ years in San Juan. His leadership during the growth period of academic standards and assessments helped all of us learn the value of having hard conversations around data. His legacy to education, to friends and to colleagues is the passion to build an education system which is equitable for all students, which values the diverse assets they bring to our community and which closes the achievement gap. Chris retired from San Juan in 2005 but continued his work by co-authoring _Culturally Proficient Inquiry: A Lens for Identifying and Examining Educational Gaps_. We will do well to let his passion, commitment, and generous nature guide our work."
