Bob Stoppenbach

Bob Stoppenbach

From Mark Shields -

I am very sad to report that our beloved classmate, Bob Stoppenbach, died suddenly on December 26.  Bob was one of the most memorable of our classmates.  He was always approachable and seemed genuinely interested in what others were saying.  There always seemed to be a mischievous tinkle in his eye and he showed delight in a good story.  I have known Bob from the earliest days of grade school and was very happy to rekindle our relationship over the last five years when my wife, Nikki, and I would go yearly to London to see my late brother’s daughter and her children.  We made a point of meeting Bob and his delightful wife, Virginia, at their art gallery, receiving a brief art lesson from them, and then going for a pleasant lunch at a nearby restaurant.  Bob and Ginny honored us by being our house guests in Chicago when he returned to the U.S. a few years ago for a Stoppenbach family reunion for the opening of a music center at the University of Wisconsin named for a family member.  During their stay, I learned about “Stoppenbach sausages” and how the sausage factory fit into the family history.

Below I have provided some remembrances from some of Bob’s international friends to give a sense of the breadth and depth of impact he had on others in addition to our class and on the art world in general.

Contributions in his honor could be given to: Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Please keep Ginny in your thoughts and prayers.
