Edith Smidt

Provided by Roger Petersen:

Edith was a passenger on a motorcycle.  There was a red light violation by one driver, (or the other), at an intersection.  There was a collison.  Edith died from her injuries.  The operator of the motorcycle survived.

Edith died in an accident October 10, 1971 at the age of 23. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Borge W Smidt of Lake Bluff. Edith was graduated in February 1971 from the University of Wisconsin, majoring in Spanish. She spent her Junior Year abroad in Spain and had planned to go on for her Master's Degree in Latin American Studies.

A memorial fund to benefit Barat College (LF) students has been established in Edith's name. This Edith Smidt Memorial Student Loan Fund was established by her family and friends as a continuing fund to serve the realistic needs of Barat students. Edith's mother was a student at Barat at the time of Edith's death.

The family chose Barat as the recipient of the Fund because of the Upward Bound program established there in 1965. This program benefits students from low income families who may have the potential to pursue college careers, if given an adequate academic base and self-confidence in their own ability to succeed. Because of Edith's interest in working among Spanish-speaking people, the Fund was primarily set up to help students of Spanish descent who qualify for assistance. However, the Fund may also be extended to all other students who demonstrate need. Further, the purpose of the Fund is to promote and facilitate completion of a degree program at Barat.

Your Mother and Father had broken hearts until the days they died, now you're all together.

Still saddened after all these years,

Roger Petersen
