January 25, 2015 on Legacy.com in San Antonio -

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and true Christian, David was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on January 21, 2015 at the age of 66. David was born August 21, 1948 in Montgomery, Alabama to Julia and Edward Ludwig Jr. David will be dearly missed by his wife of 25 years, JoAnn Ludwig, children Andrew Ludwig (Jennifer), Jeffery Ludwig (Sarah), daughters Veronica Valadez (Librado), Vanessa Garcia, 11 Grandchildren, and 1 Great-granddaughter. He will be lovingly remembered by his brothers Thomas P. Ludwig (Pamela) and Edward A. Ludwig III (Sharon) along with numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
David was a dedicated veteran, having served 3 years in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After obtaining his Accounting Degree from Eastern Illinois, he went on to obtain his Certified Public Accountant certification and worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Chicago, Ill. After moving to Texas in 1982, David worked for the United States Air Force in various civil service positions as an accountant for 33 years, receiving a distinguished Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award upon his retirement in January 2009. Upon his retirement, Dave enjoyed pursuing his collectible hobby, something he and his wife shared immensely, but mostly enjoying all the wonderful friendships made along the way.
In recent years, David fought a long and courageous battle against esophageal cancer but knew that no matter what the outcome was to be, that the Lord our God was always by his side. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).
Words cannot express how much David will be missed by his family and friends. He was an extremely kind, loving and humble man and his kindness spoke through his actions. He treated everyone with genuine respect and was always ready to help those in need, always doing it in a selfless way in order to not bring attention to himself. His selfless acts included sponsoring numerous children from various countries for the last 25 years, helping those less fortunate, and giving his time and money through his many volunteer efforts. His volunteer efforts included Helping Hands Lifeline, Fort Sam Fisher House, and Morgan's Wonderland. But his most humble acts were just assisting those that needed a little bit of help to get them through life; whether it be a talk or a prayer. Everyone who ever met David knew that aside from his kindness, he had a great sense of humor, always making them laugh and bringing joy into their lives.
Our dear David, "Although you are gone, you are not forgotten, even with us apart, your spirit lives within us, forever and ever in our hearts". - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sanantonio/obituary.aspx?pid=173957130#sthash.NjlC7r7b.dpuf

Dave was areally good guy.We were good friends junior and senior years and we reconnected briefly after year one in college. So it's been a long time, but I remember him well.

I have very clear memories of Dave, especially from track and football. He had a great gift of speed and it was a pleasure to watch him. Whether running the 220 or 440 in track or running a reverse in football, he typically left others in the dust. He was always modest about his accomplishments which made it all the more fun to be with him. He is missed.

I knew David Ludwig from junior high school in Lake Bluff and then in high school at LFHS. He was good natured, fiercely competitive in sports, an accomplished athlete, a friend to all, and mature beyond his years. Looking back on those years so long ago I wish I'd had more of that maturity and strove a little harder at sports. I guess that's what growing up is all about. It says a lot about his human qualities that even fifty years after I last spoke to him, I am genuinely saddened to hear that he is gone. Every loss of a person such as David challenges us to be better people. Go with God, David. Patrrick Border

Sad to hear of Dave's passing. He was in my husband Rick Davenport's class and lived behind my family in Knollwood. We used to play baseball in an empty field when we were younger with Bernie and Frank Mayer, Linda Relken, Rick and I. Our condolences to his family that he is no longer in this life with them but as believers we will be together again in the next.
In His Love,
Rick and Cheryl Davenport

Gone too soon. I have good memories of Dave. I still have a photo with him of our track relay team after a victory. Sure doesn't seem like almost 50 years have passed. David "Wink" Julian

My years at LFHS were happier and richer having had the loyal friendship of Dave. He was special! I know that that he lived his life after "high school" as a wonderful husband, father , and friend to many.. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I remember Dave as a kind and thoughtful guy...a friend to anyone. It is obvious that he remained such and lived a life of substance and faith, and full of love.

Dave was one of those "all round good guys" who was friends with everyone!
I remember him best from our Summertime Softball teams, beach parties, and iconic parties in Jerry Harding's basement!
