A 58-year-old man was hit and killed by a semi-truck while walking on Pipken Road before dawn Sunday, deputies said.

A 58-year-old man was hit and killed by a semi-truck while walking on Pipkin Road before dawn Sunday, deputies said.
Thomas Edward Brown, of 6650 New Tampa Highway, Lakeland, was wearing dark clothing and walking west on the unlit roadway on Pipkin Road about 5 a.m. Sunday, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
William House, 44, of Covey Circle North, Lakeland, was driving a 2005 International semi-truck west at the same time. 
House told deputies that he felt the truck hit something, so he pulled over. House discovered that he had struck a pedestrian and immediately called 911. 
Emergency medical responders declared Brown dead at the scene.
This was the second time Brown had been struck by a vehicle while walking in the road, family members told deputies. Preliminary investigation revealed that he might have been impaired by alcohol, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.
The investigation is ongoing; however, no charges are pending.
