Karl Albert Funke, age 61, of Maryland, entered enternal life on Monday, April 25, 2011, at Federick Memorial Hospital after a surgical procedure. Karl was born in Baraga county on Jan. 25, 1950, son of Esther (Tollefson) and Francis (Chauncey) Funke.
A 1968 LHS graduate, Karl also earned a B.S.Central Michigan University (1972); J.D. Antioch School of Law (1975) and was a Chapman-World Campus Afloat alumni and collected cultural artifacts during his global travels. He also held numerous track and field records in both high school and college sports.
Karl had a passion for Indian law, related economics, and the preservation of traditional tribal culture. He provided key research to various government and educational  institutions and was a   supporting author of the book - American Indian Sovereignty And Law. He also drafted and presented congressional legislation, wrote numerous articles, gave inspirational lectures, and has referenced quotes in various publications and media.
Karl represented other tribes as and attorney and lobbyist for Native American rights in Washington D.C. His many works included; Task Force Specialist, Task Force on Law Revision, Consolidation, Codification, Indian Gaming, American Indian Policy Review Commission, and U.S. Congress. Karl was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) and pioneered gaming legislation that paved the way for the Ojibwa and other tribes.
A loving father, brother, uncle, and friend, Karl will be missed and forever remembered for his kind
heart, sense of humor and Great Spirit.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Chauncey; brother, Curt Funke; and his only son, Zachery James Funke.
Surviving are his brothers: Howard Funke of Coeur d'Alene, ID; Sonny (Bunny) Funke of Campbell, CA; nieces and nephews: Jeannie (Funke) Cox of Los Gatos, CA; Kurt (Chummer) Funke of Monterey, CA; Michele (Steve) Martinac of Ishpeming, MI; Tammy (Funke) Hanson of Escanaba, MI; Tracy Funke of Escanaba, MI; Buzz Funke of Seattle, WA; Chris Funke of San Luis Obisop (Avila Beach), CA.
A Memorial will be held in L'Anse for Karl and Zach at a future date.
