On Monday, the Palm Beach Community College honor student attended morning sessions, dropped his girlfriend at work, visited a friend, and then took a late afternoon dip at Lake Worth Beach. There, authorities say, he drowned in rough surf, despite the efforts of two would-be rescuers.
Thomas, who'd been 2007 captain of the Santaluces High School soccer team, was currently studying accounting and participated in traveling soccer and track-and-field teams at PBCC.
And he found time to be a bookkeeper and supervisor at a Winn-Dixie at Hypoluxo Road and Congress, his sister, Tanya, said at midday.
Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, the 20-year-old, who lived in suburban Boynton Beach, was swimming about 200 yards off shore, about 200 yards north of the Lake Worth Pier. Donald Smith, 15, said later he saw Thomas flailing his arms and screaming for help.
She said the Jamaican native moved here with his family in 2003, is survived by his mother, two sisters and a brother.
In the Santaluces yearbook for 2007, Thomas' senior year and the year he captained the Chiefs, Thomas wrote, "To play soccer it takes heart, dedication, and teamwork. If you do not have those few things, there is no sense in playing. As captain, it's my responsibility to motivate the team."
