Just to show how clueless I was, I don't remember any of these "missings" nor the pounding!  What I do remember was the well stocked chemistry lab <grin>.

I remember the pounding.....I felt like we were in the east wing of San Quentin.

Redwood was opened long before it was finished and zoned for the wealthy communities.  I was from larkspur from a working class family.  We kids from Larkspur and Corte Madera were included only because the school was in our town. It was very interesting how all that worked.

Jeff and Carol,

I'm amazed how politically aware you were at the age of, what, 14.  Aware enough to know that Redwood was purposely zoned for wealthy neighborhoods and to insulate the whites from the "other" (frankly, I have to wonder just how true any of that really was).  I guess that's another thing that I was clueless about.  I just thought I was going to go to Drake, but then they built this new school out in the marshes which was closer, so I went there instead.  That changed big time in my sophomore year at Berkeley when I was one of the 600 arrested in the Free Speech Movement during the Goldwater/Johnson election.  Terry Chambers (who was a close friend at Redwood) was also arrested.  We both spent a pleasant night in the Santa Rita jail near Livermore smiley.
