JOHN PEPPER BRUNSING

BIOGRAPHY

Longtime resident and commercial fisherman, Jon Brunsing, 69, of Crescent City died September 15, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. His loving wife, Patty; two brothers, Tom and Richard Brunsing of Santa Rosa; nephews, Ryan and Michael Reid and a niece, Vanessa Brunsing, and a great-nephew, Antonio, survive him.

Jon was born March 5, 1945 in San Francisco and grew up in Sausalito and Belvedere, California. He graduated in 1963 from Redwood High School in Marin County.

As a young man, Jon sailed and raced on several boats including the Ticonderoga, across the Atlantic and throughout Europe. He and Patty were married in 1973 and lived in Mill Valley. That same year, Jon started working as a commercial fisherman and they moved to Crescent City in 1976.

For several years Jon was head of the Fisherman’s Association of Crescent City. Throughout the years he also mentored several fishermen and was known as “Lurch” by his friends. As an owner and operator of several boats, his fishing career spanned 40 years.

Jon had a finely honed mind. His interests included cooking, English history, auto racing, and mosaics.

Jon spent his final days under the expert care of the nurses at Sutter Coast Hospital. He passed away peacefully with family and friends at his bedside.

Contributions in Jon’s behalf can be made to Del Norte Scholarship Foundation, 125 Cable Lane, Crescent City, CA 95531.

Jon had a major impact on everyone who knew him. Those of us who were lucky enough to have grown up with him from children in grammar school were treated to his great humor as well as wisdom. He was a mans man and could easily qualify as a GQ and man of the year. There are many stories throughout Jon's life and I wouldn't be surprised if someone would write a bibliography about him. I am very sad at his passing and yet it makes me smile when I think of Jon. My heart is with Patti at this somber time and may she sleep peacefully at night knowing she was the most important person in his life. God bless you Jon and when you are sailing the great oceans in the sky always look to the horizon and know that all your friends are cheering you on. We love you Jon,  Chris (Coomsey) Coombs

I was so sad to hear of Jon's passing.  I'm really happy we all got to enjoy him and Patty at the 50th reunion and the reed friday night mini reunion.  Jon said I was the oldest women he knew ( we were in second grade in San Francisco together).  Patty didn't think it was a nice thing for him to say untill he explained.  We all had big crused on Jon at Reed but he always already had a girl friend. Its been a pleasure to know him and I pray for him and his family, God bless and good bye Love Lil

I was so sad to hear about Jon, my thoughts are with Patty.  I missed the reunion this year due to illness but heard all about it from Phyllis Perry Compagna.     Precious memories of Reed School and Jon who all the girls had a crush on including me.  I know that he was a good man and is safe with the angels sailing to his new adventure.   God speed Jon.

Was so saddened by Jon's passing. Somehow I missed seeing Jon @ the Reunion but Jon was in at least one or two of my classes for all four years of H.S. & I always looked forward to seeing him & his smile. Not only was Jon cute but he was a true,y nice guy! I had forgotten about his sailing, nice to be reminded. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, he will be missed. Kathy Deedy Hart

I grew up in Belvedere, too. Jon and I, and other friends, were always getting into mischief. Jon was kind of the ring leader, I think....Flying Purple People Eater still runs through my mind when I think of Jon....I hope things are good for you, now, Jon. Send us a message! Are there aliens out there?
