Carol Ann Herschleb Carol was born to Fred and Sydney Herschleb on October 16, 1945 at Notre Dame Hospital in San Francisco and was raised in Kentfield, California. She quietly passed away on August 10, 2012 at her home in Nevada City, California after living for several years with breast cancer. She passed with dignity and was comforted by the constant presence of family and friends at her side. Carol attended Adeline E. Kent School in Kentfield, Redwood High School in Larkspur, and majored in painting at Denver University. Shortly before completing her undergraduate studies, she took a class in ceramics, and her focus changed. Carol began a career in ceramics with studios San Rafael, Inverness Park of West Marin County, and Nevada City. She produced works in both high-fire earthenware as well as brightly colored low-fire pieces, which are easily recognized and revered by the many who have them in their homes. When handling the heavy clay became too difficult, she started a coffee service, Carol and Co., serving community cultural events with espresso and home baked goods from behind her signature black and white checked display. Carol became a pinnacle in the Nevada County arts community. She brought her great organizational skills and taste to restructure many of the local events over the years: Artisans Festival at Miners Foundry Thanksgiving weekend; Nevada County Open Studio Arts Tour; Sierra Festival of the Arts, Grass Valley; Celtic Festival, Grass Valley and Nevada County Arts Collaborative. Her keen eye and graphic sensibility will be missed. Carol is survived by her sister, Lissa Herschleb of San Rafael, brother, John Herschleb and niece Jill Herschleb of San Francisco, and nephew Greg Herschleb of Los Angeles. Carol just missed the birth of nephew Grant Kamron Herschleb. She will be missed by her family and by her many, many dear friends in Nevada county and beyond. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Hospice of the Foothills for for their understanding and compassionate care. Due to their cutbacks in grants we kindly ask donations be made to Hospice of the Foothills in Carol's name.
