PEREZ, Lotus C. (Schaffer), passed away on January 7, 1999 in Tucson, Arizona at age 52. She was the precious fiancee and dedicated partner of Dr. Steven Gurgevich; cherished mother of Kristina and Joseph Krow, Michael and Christine Perez and Gioia and John Stenson; much loved sister-in-law of James Perez; proud grandmother of Gabriel Perez, Jordan Steele, Jamie and Marlee Perez, Noah Krow and Emily Stenson; dear sister of Lee Schaffer; loving daughter of Jeanette Schaffer and Irene Perez; loving aunt of Matthew Morbello; devoted daughter of the late Ed and Marjorie Schaffer. Preceded in death in 1996 by her beloved husband of 32 years, Tom Perez. Also survived by many special aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A longtime Pacifica, CA resident, Ms. Perez graduated Summa Cum Laude from San Francisco State University in 1994. She was greatly respected as an accomplished copy editor and journalist for several Bay Area publications.

For the past two years, Ms. Perez has split her time between her home in Pacifica and her home in Tucson, which she shared with her devoted partner, Dr. Steven Gurgevich. Together they co-founded Tranceformation Works, an internet-based business that provides healing resources and support for individuals and families experiencing chronic illness. This venture came out of their mutual experience of caring for spouses who had been terminally ill and their desire to help others. Ms. Perez and Dr. Gurgevich became engaged this New Year’s Day at 12:01 a.m., as their first act of 1999. They had hoped to be married soon.

Passed away unexpectedly on January 7, 1999 in Tucson, Arizona at age 52. She was the precious fiancee and dedicated partner of Dr. Steven Gurgevich. For the past two years, Ms. Perez has split her time between her home in Pacifica, California and her home in Tucson, which she shared with her devoted partner, Dr. Steven Gurgevich.Together they co-founded Tranceformation Works, an internet-based business that provides healing resources and support for individuals and families experiencing chronic illness. Ms. Perez was a member and volunteer at Unity Church in Tucson, a Summa Cum Laude graduate of San Francisco StateUniversity, and a greatly respected copy editor and accomplished journalist for several Bay Area publications.

I am sorry to hear about her passing. Throughout grammar school and high school, Lotus was always very kind to me and on those occasions when she would notice that I was sad or in an adolescent funk, she would ask me if I was okay.  She was a sweet person. God bless her soul.

Lotus had the perfect name. She was kindness itself with a great empathetic personality.
 
Of course high school is vivid in memory, but the best is the people. The most difficult and beautiful one is Lotus Schaffer. She bugged me for years to visit her with my husband, so we made the trip to her south-of-San Francisco home in 1998, staying there a few days and talking about old times, meeting her daughter and grandchildren. These stories, some of which were interesting for a Canadian husband who is younger, were rich in Lotus' memory. 
 
She praised me up and down because evidently I had helped her through tough teen times, even risking late arrivals at classrooms after long chats in the hallway. Beyond impressing Antony with how great I was, I loved hearing about teen life again. Lotus insisted we take gifts and that we stay in touch. She wanted to copy our wedding rings (Moebius "strip" with only one endless side in eternity) for her next wedding (her first husband had passed and she had met a wonderful man whose wife had passed of the same thing. We often wrote emails, especially when she was in philosophical mode. 
 
We kept in contact as she was getting plans together for their wedding rings until one day she surprisingly/shockingly told us she had few hours left on the planet. I have a part of me that is sad, especially whenever I see a lotus or a mote full of them in Japan or China or wherever. What a wonderful Lotus she was, such a great name for her.
 
The richest story she told me had nothing to do with me but is an illustration of her career and her cheerful approach: She was hired as the first copy editor of WIRED magazine. They would write and she would straighten it all our, but on her typewriter! They were computer geniuses and she was from the old school. She learned from the WIRED folks and she taught the wisdom of clear communication. Imagine, a typewriter at WIRED!
 
Can't forget her and her tenacity to find me here in Canada and convince us to visit her! She never told us she was ill, just kept us interested during the whole visit. She gave us books, other presents, great breakfasts. Out at dinner, she would regale us with WIRED stories, recall some writer she loved and just rhapsodize about a grandchild. It was lovely. So mature, not at all the insecure teen, salt of the earth mother and grandmother and able to tell a joke well, this remarkable woman is embodying some lotuses somewhere in the Universe as I write this, for sure.
