Michael Lawing

Mike Lawing was a member of the SA Class of 1968. He was friends of many Class of '67 members and asked to be included in our class as a Guest so that he could keep up with his friends.  He passed away on December 18, 2015.  His obituary is below, courtesy of the Brown Winn Funeral Home in Raleigh, NC.

Michael Griffin Lawing, 69, of Garner, NC, died peacefully at his home with his wife Carolyn by his side, on Friday evening, December 18. Mike was born in Marion, NC, December 15, 1946 to the late Milford G. and Martha M. Lawing. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Carolyn Hughes Lawing; a step-daughter, Susan Ramsey; 2 step-grandsons, Jacob and Lucas Ramsey; a sister, Kay Lawing Porter and husband Fred G. Porter, Jr. of Weddington, NC; 2 nephews, Fred G. Porter III, Michael J. Porter and spouse Juliana M. Porter of Charlotte, NC; 2 great nieces Sophia and Lily Porter; several aunts and uncles in the Winston-Salem area, and over 2 dozen cousins who live around the country. Michael was the first grandchild born to William L. and Margie B. Lawing. He grew up in Winston-Salem, graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and graduated from St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC. in the Class of 1968. Mike loved history and had an uncanny ability for remembering historical names, dates, battles, and events with American and European history. He enjoyed visiting American Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields and cemeteries. Mike had a true appreciation for his family heritage and loved sharing his research with his Lawing and McGimsey relatives. With the help of his wife Carolyn, Mike wrote and published 2 books, My Dearest Friend, The Civil War Correspondence of Cornelia McGimsey and Lewis Warlick, and The Marion Massacre, an account of the 1929 Marion mill workers strike. Mike possessed a life long love of travel. After a 5 year battle with colon cancer, he was able to accomplish everything on his bucket list with the love and support of his wife Carolyn. There will be no service at this time per Mike's request. In the spring, Mike's cousins, family and friends will celebrate his life at Oak Island, exact date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Transitions Life Care, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or St. Andrews University, Class Project of 1968, 1700 Dogwood Mile Street, Laurinburg, NC 28352. Mike will be missed by his loving family and friends!
