Bill Barry III

William Francis Barry III

WINSTON-SALEM - William Francis Barry III, 65, of Winston-Salem died Monday August 23, 2010 at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living. Born in Philadelphia, PA April 28, 1945, he was the son of Dr. William F. Barry, Jr. and Lousia Stephenson Barry. A graduate of Virginia Episcopal School and St. Andrews Presbyterian College Class of 1967, Bill was a graduate student at Roosevelt University in Chicago and was bringing an engagement ring to his fiance when he had an automobile accident in January, 1968 that resulted in a severe head injury. Almost two years later, following extensive rehabilitation, he married his fiance, Hilda Diane Savage of Penderlea, NC on December 27, 1969. Their marriage of almost 41 years was a strong partnership and a joyful life together despite the ravages to health that his head injuries caused in his later years. They loved to garden and over the years the land around their home produced lots of flowers, big tomatoes and good neighbors. Another pleasure was traveling to be with family in Atlantic Beach and Penderlea, as well as trips with Moravian friends, such as their trip together to Israel in 2001. Following his years of recovery, Bill was employed at Greenfield Farm and Garden Store in Kernersville, Hanes Dye and Finishing and Brake Electric Products Co. in Winston-Salem. He was a member of Trinity Moravian Church and enjoyed singing in the choir, serving on the Board of Elders, and being a part of the Herbert Spaugh Sunday School Class. He was an Eagle Scout and a Troop Committee member of Boy Scout Troop 716, as well as a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. Bill was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, Hilda Savage Barry of Winston-Salem; his mother, Louisa Stephenson Barry of Chapel Hill, NC; two sisters, Barbara Ann Barry of Wake Forest, NC and Susan Barry Cook of Winterville, NC and husband, Reginald Cook; three nephews, Dr. Joseph Alexander Duncan and wife, Dr. Elizabeth Weidenfield Duncan of Chapel Hill, NC, Daniel Mangum and wife, Hrisavgi Mangum of Durham, NC and Donny Harper-Mangum and spouse, Rick Harper-Mangum of Durham, NC; and three great-nephews, Jacob Duncan, John Duncan and Christopher Mangum. Bill is also survived by his wife's parents, William Thomas Savage and Lottie Hawkes Savage of Penderlea, NC; his wife's two sisters, Bonnie Savage Horrell and husband, Wayne Horrell of Atkinson, NC and Sara Savage Youngblood and husband, Peter Youngblood of Portsmouth, VA; and his wife's nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 27, 2010 at Trinity Moravian Church with the Rev. John Jackman officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends prior to the Service from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Church in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Bill's memory may be made to Trinity Moravian Church, 220 East Sprague St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127 or Hospice Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Special thanks to the Staff of Elizabeth and Tab Williams Day Center, Mallard Ridge Assisted Living, and Hospice and Palliative Care Center for their love, kindness, and support that has been steadfast for many years. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the Barry family.

Bill was a member of the Winston Salem Dorm.  He was bright, fun-loving and always displayed a big smile.  He was also very smart.  Due to his accident, his life potential was probably not realized, he did have a wonderful marriage to  Hilda and a deep and abiding life in the church.  Rest in Peace, my fellow classmate.
