Obituary for Laurence M. Smith
Mr. Laurence Mulholland Smith, age 73, of Winston, passed away, Saturday, May 28, 2016. He was born December 2, 1942 in Durham, NC, the son of the late Mr. Robert Sidney Smith and the late Mrs. Lucille Mulholland Smith. Laurence is a graduate of St. Andrews College Class of 1967 where he was known as "Flo"; he also holds a Master’s Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was very involved in music and theater; he served as the Choir Director at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Carrollton for fourteen years and later served Villa Rica First United Methodist Church for a number of years. He was very involved in the Carroll County Community Theater, serving as a director, actor, music director, and also on the Board of Directors. He was an avid Nascar fan, and especially loved Tony Stewart. He founded the Carrollton Swim Team and was the head coach for the 14-15 year olds, which is now called the Carrollton Blue Fins. Laurence loved sports; he was a former employee of the Carrollton Recreation Department. He also, taught Physical Education at West Georgia College, which is now the State University of West Georgia.
Laurence served thirty plus years with High School and Recreation athletics. He was a member of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club, where he had served as President. Laurence had served as General Manager of the Fairfield Plantation POA. He recently retired after 15 years with Neighborhood Management Associates in Smyrna. He belonged to Bart and Joyce Sims Life Group at Midway Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Jesse Dalton Hamilton.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Hamilton Brown of Winston; sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew and Tara Smith of Bremen, David and Libby Smith of Bremen, Benjamin Smith and Katie Giacinto of Charleston, SC; stepdaughters, Misty and Tim Sarvis of Charlotte, NC; Daughter from the heart, Kelly Jones of Villa Rica, and grandchildren, Kiley Jones and Kendall Ivey of Villa Rica; stepson, David and Khanh Brown of Jefferson; sister, Frances E. Vaughan of VA; grandchildren, Daisy Morrison of Bremen, Jon Smith of Bremen, Keegan Smith of Bremen, Rebekah Smith of Bremen, Cameron Smith of Charleston, SC; mother-in-law, Emma Lee Hamilton; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Memorial Services will be conducted Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 7:00 PM from the Chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home with Dr. Joe Tanner officiating.
