The Marine Corps says a 37-year-old gunnery sergeant has died in North Carolina of injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident last week.
Sgt. Christopher E. Cunningham was a 19-year veteran of the Corps and a native of Leavenworth, Kan. Officials announced his death in a news release Thursday.
The Corps says Cunningham was injured Sept. 2 in Fayetteville, N.C., when a car failed to yield at an intersection and struck his motorcycle. He died two days later at a hospital.
Cunningham was on leave after recently returning from combat duty. He was stationed at Marine Corps Augmentation and Training Support Unit in Quantico, Va., a subordinate unit of the Special Forces Command at Camp Lejeune,N.C.
The Corps says Cunningham leaves a wife and two children.
I met Chris upon moving to Leavenworth. He was 1 of the first people I met here as I was making my transition from Maryland to Kansas. We were close friends and have alot of great memories. I wish your family all the best in the future my good friend, but it's hard to believe even to this day that your gone. You were 1 of the great ones my friend and may GOD bless you and yours forever.
