Woneva Wilson Myers
December 6, 1943 - March 14, 2024
Woneva Wilson Myers, 80, passed away on March 14, 2024, in her home. She was born at American Fork Hospital on December 6, 1943. Her name came about before she was born. Her mother, Elna was hospitalized after giving birth to Marlyn, her older brother. Elna’s roommate was a Lakota Native American woman from South Dakota with the name Woneva. In Lakota the name means Life’s Breath Spirit.
Woneva married John LaMerrill Myers on June 9, 1961. They became parents to two children, Jubal Merrill, and Misti Woneva.
As a child she moved often because her father, Walt, worked installing gas lines as a heavy equipment mechanic. A few of the places she lived were in California, Wyoming, Pennsylvania and of course Utah.
She had a love of horses. Her first and favorite childhood horse was named BettyLou. Another favorite horse of hers was Champion. When she was about 12 years old Champion fell breaking Woneva’s right leg. The leg was not set right which caused her one leg to be shorter than the other.
She met the love of her life, Merrill, at a basket dance in Cedar Fort. They were married on June 9, 1961, in Highland, UT at the red brick Strasberg church. They lived in Lehi, where they raised their two children, Jubal Merril and Misti Woneva. The family had many different animals over the years, especially horses.
Woneva was a member of the Bridelettes Riding club, where they performed in drill competitions and parades. Later she became a professional barrel racer with her beloved racehorse Scooter. She and Merrill traveled to different rodeos, which was a big part of their life.
At about the same time, she was attending dental assistant school. After she graduated, she began working for several different dental offices in the Salt Lake Valley and later worked for two oral surgeons, where she assisted in the surgeries. Blake Evans was one of the dentists she had worked for and developed a great relationship with.
Her last job was for working for Lehi City as the front desk associate dealing with utilities. After she left Lehi City, she began volunteering at the American Fork Hospital in the records department. She had been there for 15 years before the hospital moved from physical patient records to digital records.
She battled breast cancer and survived.
She was preceded in death by her soulmate, Merrill, her two brothers, Elroy and Joe, and her parents, Walt and Elna. She was very proud of and supported her children, Jubal, and Misti and her 9 grandchildren with 5 great-grandchildren.
She is loved by many and will be missed dearly. Her family expresses gratitude for the many healthcare workers who supported Woneva throughout her life.
