Donnie Ray passed away on July 11, 2004, aftre a nine year illness. In 2001, he received a liver transplant and did great with it, even though, it was an unbelievably difficult ordeal. In May of 2004, he was diagnosed with esophogeal cancer and died in July. His smile still remained until the end, and he always had something funny to say to make everyone around him feel better. He was so proud to be a part of the Leonard High School Class of 1959.
Donnie Ray Memorial Scholarship
The stands at North Shelby High School are filled every April during the Annual Donnie Ray Memorial Alumni Basketball games. This tradition, started back in 2005, funds the Donnie Ray Memorial Scholarship at North Shelby. Between the Lady Raider Alumni game and the Raider Alumni game, the Ray family recognizes the scholarship recipients from the current senior class. If you are interested in donating to the fund or helping out next year, contact Kerri Greenwell at the North Shelby High School.

I will always remember, how much fun Donnie was, the time he had the mumps, how much fun we had teasing him. He was such a good friend and classmate.Roberta Carpenter (Davis)
I remember Donnie & Connie coming in and visiting Wayne & I just after he had his first stroke September 20th 1989 and how uplifting it was for me for them to be there at that time showing they cared. Them being there gave me the support that I need that day. I do believe that at that time it was the start of Donnie's health problems.
