Janice Leigh Hughes   April 11, 1946 – December 28, 2024  

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Janice Leigh Hughes, who left us on December 28, 2024, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Born on April 11, 1946, Janice was a beacon of intelligence, love, humor, creativity and faith. 

Janice retired from the Northeast Independent School District, where she served as a dedicated and admired administrator after teaching for many years. She was deeply loved by her co-workers, friends, neighbors, and family. Her boundless spirit extended beyond her professional life as she passionately volunteered her time to her church, the homeless, and jail ministry, always striving to make the world a better place. 

Janice's interests were as diverse as they were rich. She had a green thumb and loved gardening, enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and other card games, and had a passion for vintage jewelry. She was quick with the puns, bringing smiles--or groans--to all recipients. 

Although September is the official month for ovarian cancer awareness, Janice lived with the cause in her heart every day, a legacy that will continue through her children and granddaughter. She faced her illness with unwavering grace and dignity, never once complaining.

A Mass will be held in her honor on January 15 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, followed by a private interment of her ashes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ovarian Cancer Awareness or Veterans' organizations, causes close to Janice's heart. Her generosity, inspiring nature, and spiritual strength touched the hearts of many and her memory will live on in all who knew and loved her. *Not appreciating her puns while she was alive was a grave mistake.*
