John David Barnhart was a good friend to me. Will miss him. Knew him from Big Picadome Elemetry School in the 4th grade. Came to see me while I was working at IBM Austin. I appriciated that he had. Barnhart was a member of the band. Signed, John Beatty Cotnam, Austin Texas
I liked John as well. His dad and my dad were Professors who worked closely together at UK. Therefore, we went to many events together and did things on our own while our dads presented papers or spoke at seminars or whatever. John's dad later became a Dean and the big Barnhart Building near the football stadium is named for him. I had already been on the West Coast for many years when my sister called in late 1997 to say John had passed away from a heart attack while working on a tread mill in a Lexington Gym. He was the father of two sets of twins. (I hope my memory is correct.) Anyway, while we were growing up John would make fearless small bets with me and usually win. The funniest was during the summer of '65 he and Sue Murphy had signed up for Algebra II in summer school and he bet me he could take Sue golfing at Big Elm and then grab a sandwich. I had to caddy if he won. I figured "no way" because Sue had been dating some older guys. Anyway, for whatever reason she said "yes" and I caddied. Since unfortunately both John and Sue have passed only Wes Hudson can confirm this as he was at the course and talked to them and their caddy.
