Gary Dale Perkins

Gary Dale Perkins, 56, Minister, Chaplain, brother, husband, father and grandfather, died on April 2, 2004.  He was born Feb. 15, 1948 in Richmond KY, the son of Carl N. and Gladys L. Ramsey Perkins.  He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1966.  Gary married Linda LaRue Dillon on Aug 25, 1968 at Broadway Christian Church.  He graduated in 1970 from Milligan College in Tennessee and earned his Doctorate of Divinity in 1974 from the Lexington Theological Seminary.  Gary was ordained in 1970 by Broadway Christian Church.  He was commissioned in the United States Army as a Chaplain in 1974 and served as U.S. Army First Signal Brigade Chaplain among other assignments in the U.S., Germany, and South Korea.  After 22 years of service, he retired in 1996 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  After his retirement, he served as Associate Director at Open Arms Christian Ministries at Switz City, Indiana from 1996 – 2000.  He and his wife were facilitators for the Dynamic Marriage program throughout their marriage.  He was a leader in the Emmaus Community.  Gary served as Minister of Administration and Adult Education at his home church, Broadway Christian Church until his death. He is survived by his wife, Linda, and five children: Miriam, Hannah, Alicia, Nathan and David with their spouses and one grandson, Joel.

I grew up going to the same church, Broadway Christian, as Gary.  He was very humble and devout even as a youth.  He was empathetic and compassionate and people sensed The Holy Spirit dwealt within him.  Gary became a career chaplain in the US Army and served in combat and non-combat theaters around the globe.  I understand from the testimony of others his troops adored him.  When he retired he beame an Associate Minister back at Broadway and the people there were pleased to be his flock.  Cancer claimed Gary back in April 2004 and he left behind his Bride, and our classmate -  Linda Dillon, and five great children.  RIP....
