Update - Bringing The Lions Home
Lincoln Lions Project update from Ron Slaughter, '73:
May 10, 2024
I received an email this morning stating that the Lions will be arriving at Lincoln on the morning of 5/22. We paid off the second Lion and apparently had enough funds to cover shipping. We are not using a temporary site due to cost, so they will be housed in a fenced area next to the maintenance facility. They will be there until the permanent site is projected to be ready in 2026. At that time, we will have to pay Lincoln roughly $5000 to move Lions to the permanent site. As we are incurring some unexpected expenses from Lincoln, the committee asked me to raise the funding goal up from $50,000 to $65,000. This will hopefully provide us with funding to cover initial site development. We do not want to start brick/tile sales with a 2 year wait time. When that does begin, we anticipate having enough funds to complete the project. And to be clear, I am not asking anyone from the class of 73 to make any donations, we have done our share. We raised the funding goal so other alums will not stop giving if they choose to do so. I'll keep you posted on future developments. Peace.
Update April 20, 2024 - URGENT
Lion Project Update from Ron Slaughter, ‘73
Photo shows alumni fundraising committee member giving a ceremonial check to vendor for $25,000...paying off the first Lincoln Lion.
Dear Classmates,
Just want to provide an update on the Lincoln Lions project, this photo gives a great image of the two Lincoln Lions. The young lady in the photo is Carol Black, Lincoln class of 1968...she and her husband, a Lincoln trustee went to see the Lincoln Lions and give the vendor a ceremonial $25,000 check indicating that we have paid in full for one of the Lincoln Lions. Carol is on the Alumni committee that is working steadfastly to raise the final $5000 which will allow us pay off the second Lincoln Lion. Please pass the photo to any Lincoln alumni you know and provide the context of the photo as I have stated above.
Our target is to have both Lincoln Lions paid in full by the upcoming commencement on May 5th. Those of you who are active on Facebook and social media can help us get the word out to as many Alumni as possible. We are asking ‘73 classmates to send texts, emails, etc. to any other Lincoln alumni who they know are not in the class of ‘73. If they would like to donate, ask them to use the dedicated LU Lion Fund link. If they are sending checks, they should be made out to the Lincoln University foundation but designated payment to the Antique Lion fund. Please see the dedicated LU Lion Fund link below.

Emeritus Class of '73
Join in with fellow classmates and alumni as we bring this awesome lion home!
UPDATES - JUNE 3, 2023
On this day 50 years ago over 217 undergraduates marched into the "new gym" and left as alumni of Lincoln University!
I believe that we were the last to graduate in June.
Happy 50 Years as Alumni of the first degree-granting university for black people
in the U.S. and the first HBCU!
Hail! Hail! Lincoln!
May 9. 2023
Dear Lincoln Lions, who graduated in 1973 or entered Lincoln in 1969,
We did it! We returned to the hallowed grounds of our beloved Lincoln and we reminisced and made new memories. It warmed my heart to see all of you. It was just what I needed to sooth my soul and heal my spirit.
I am so proud of us. I am sure that the Emeritus Class of 1973 made Lincoln history with the number of classmates who returned and the $160,000 we donated to the school. We partied like it was 1969, (at least in our minds!) and paid for it the next day!
Our reunion weekend was a blessing from God. The weather, the friendships, the class dinner, the T shirts, the fun, the stories, the partying, the laughter, the conversations – all blessings that I will cherish for a lifetime.
For those of you who were not able to attend, we missed you and thought of you during our celebration.
Special congratulations to our classmates, Earl Jennings, Theresa Hoover, Ezra Hill and Howard Robertson, who received awards at the Award Banquet. They deserved and earned this special recognition.
Of course it was all made possible by the many volunteers who did the work. It would not have been a success without you. So thank you for volunteering, participating and giving.
We love each other and we love Lincoln. Nothing can break our bond. We are family!
Hail! Hail! Lincoln!!
Sincerely,
Vicki
