Maryann...I'll always remember her beautiful, long red hair. And how she was both so quiet and so kind. And so super smart! Maryann loved horses, something I never knew anything about. I remember, I was sad when I realized that she had stopped coming to science class because she had been kicked in the head by a horse. But I don't think I understood this meant she would eventually slip away from our world, leaving without the closure more sudden events bring. I'll be raising a glass for you, sweet Maryann.
My dear Maryann, You were my first best friend. You loved horses from the time we met when we were only a few years old. We shared so many fun times as neighbors. Remember when we used to pretend we were horses and actually drink water from a bucket?! As we entered different schools, our friendship changed and our interests changed. But, we still held dear our early childhood memories. I remember when you had your accident and I remember stroking your head and beautiful red hair as you lay in your hospital bed at home in the living room. I picture you now on a beautiful horse, with your hair flying in the wind as you ride. I know your mom is on the side of the arena watching you with pride. I know your dad, sisters and brother are keeping your memory alive here on earth. I have thought of you quite often as my own daughters have ridden across our pasture on their own horses. You will be forever loved in my heart and soul.
Maryann was a truly lovely person, sweet and smart and caring. Nancy Corbett and I hung out with her a lot, talking about books and life -- and when she got injured we visited her in her hospital bed, and hoped with all her hearts that she would wake up. Her passing was a deep shock. Such a terrible thing to happen to someone so young. Her memory is treasured.
