A young man from Los Alamos lost his life in a climbing accident on Saturday (August 3, 2002).

Garth Ramsey, 22, was part of a group spending the day climbing the steep cliffs at the canyon located at the end of Kimberly Lane in White Rock, according to Los Alamos Police Department records.
Friends said Ramsey slipped from the rocks while climbing and fell 200 feet to his death. Emergency crews arrived at the scene of the tragedy at about 3 p.m., and recovered Ramsey's body.

Ramsey is remembered as a young man full of promise, blessed with a great gift for music, who generously gave of himself to family, his girlfriend, friends, and community.

He was a senior music education major at Texas Christian University, and looked forward to playing in a symphony orchestra. He graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1998, where he had played trumpet in Marching Band, Jazz Band, and the Wind Ensemble. He was an Eagle Scout in Boy Scout Troop 122 in Los Alamos.

Raj Jain was Ramsey's friend and schoolmate at LAHS, an also in the Eagle Scout program. Raj's father, Mahavir Jain, chairman of the New Mexico District of Boy Scouts, remembers, "I knew Garth as a fine Eagle Scout. I thought highly of him. He was a very bright young man."

"Garth's passing is a terrible loss to all those who knew him," said Paster Harry Cronis of White Rock Presbyterian Church, where the young man had been a member. "Garth had immense promise. He was a very honest and responsible young man in all his relationships. He was warm genuine, and real."

Ramsey often played music for the Presbyterian Church, Cronis said. "Garth had a great love for Christ. He played for God's delight as well as for our human enjoyment," he said.

Garth was a great guy with a kind heart. His brillance was apparent even as a small child. He used to spend hours on these very intricate geometry drawings in elementary school. He was a really good friend to all who knew him making people laugh with his quarky sense of humor. He will always be loved and missed.

I have to share my favorite moment I shared with Garth...we were working together at Baskin Robbins and we were both running around helping customers. Somewhere in the mix of all our running around, he dropped an ice cream scooper right on my foot...and I was wearing sandals! I started hopping around and yelling and groaning, my foot started turning blue, and Garth just laughed and laughed at me. I don't think I'd ever seen him laugh so hard! Of course, it took me a little while to join him laughing, but it was something we thought about often whenever we both needed a good laugh! Garth was such an awesome guy and is missed greatly! We love you Garth!

I remember playing with Garth in the second grade at Aspen Elementary school. I didn't meet up with Garth again till late in high school. I eventually learned he was my best friend's best friend and we started hanging out within our circle of friends. From these encounters I learned that he was an amazing rock climber. Garth was the first person who taught me how to lead climb. If it wasen't for his patience I would not have climbed my 5.10c. I just want to thank him for being an amazing climber and teacher.

I can juggle pretty darn well, but only because Garth taught me how to. I will juggle someday for the amusement of my kids, and when they ask me where I learned to do that, I will tell them about my best friend Garth. I am very much looking forward to that. Miss ya buddy.
