James Alan Nimocks, MD

Anesthesiologist, Husband and Father

James Alan Nimocks passed away on May 9, 2024, while on a new adventure crossing the American West.  Dr. Nimocks was born to Gordon Jex and Patricia Overholser Jex in Detroit, MI, and following his mother's re-marriage, the family moved to Louisville, Kentucky.  Jim loved building boats on the Ohio River, lifeguarding at the Lebanese American Country Club, and being part of the 1963 graduating class of Waggener High School.  He studied sciences at the University of Kentucky earning a Master of Microbiology degree and then achieving the Doctor of Medicine in 1973.

Dr. Nimocks attended specialist's training at the University of Florida in Gainesville and completed his residency in Anesthesiology while on active duty at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Nimocks also completed fellowships in Cardiology and Pediatric Anesthesia at the Children's Hospital National Medical Center Washington, DC.  He was on the teaching faculty of the National Naval Medical Center well as the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Jim always considered central Florida, and especially, the Merritt Island to Melbourne area to be his home.  He spent many years teaching CPR/ACLS to all health professions.  Dr. Nimocks served as the first Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women in Orlando.  Dr. Nimocks served as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Rockledge Regional Medical Center in Cocoa, FL.  He was President of the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, 1991.

Jim was an avid sailor, a sailboat racer, and a marine historian of the Age of Exploration.  In his later years he traveled the United States in his Airstream trailer named "Thistle Dew Too" with his wife Mary Laura.

James Nimocks leaves behind good friends and many cherished colleagues.  He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Laura Leeper Nimocks, his son, Philip Alan, his daughter, Phoebe Marie, and a loving poodle named Louis.
