Mr. O'Banion was my dad's basketball coach at Lubbock High many years before I was at Coronado. Because of that, he looked after me a little closer than normal. The ONLY time I was ever been called to the principals office was when DARRIN got pulled over during the lunch break ... and I was in the car with him. Mr. O'Banion called me to his office to "warn" me to be careful about who I went to lunch with! Guess that warning didn't sink in too far - we're still together...25 years later! Mr. O'Banion was a great man!
When I moved out of my parents house at 17, I had to beg Mr. O'Banion to allow me to stay in and finish my senior year being responsible and accountable for myself. I was so glad he allowed me to do so. After that was the first time I never skipped a day of school, even though I was able to write my own excuses.. never did it out of respect for Mr. O'Banion working with me so I could graduate. I will never forget that!
I remember how fair Mr. O'banion was. When we shaved our heads and I showed up to school in a suit with my new mohawk he gave me the choice of going to his personal barber and getting it cut off or not getting to take my finals and having to go to summer school. I decided to go with the haircut!

Mr. O'Banion was a great principal at CHS, also at Mackenzie Jr. High. Got licks from him once, but I deserved them, lol.
