Charles McCullough Obituary
Charles McCullough, 78, of Macon, Georgia passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, July 18, 2024. Charles lived a rich and fulfilling life that touched many.
Charles McCullough, known to his friends as “Charlie”, was born in Dillon, SC on November 21, 1945 to Nan & Charles “Moon” McCullough, and was raised in Latta, SC and Macon, GA. He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, GA, then from the Grady College of Mass Communication and Journalism at The University of Georgia in Athens, GA. After marrying his college sweetheart and love of his life, Maureen Palmer, he embarked on a long career in sales at Palmer Industries, ComputerLogic and Backdrops Fantastic, all in Macon.
A true Southern gentleman and an unparalleled storyteller, Charles’ wit and wisdom were rivaled by few. His early life was marked by resilience. After losing his mother at the age of nine, he helped his father raise his younger sister Ellen. This early responsibility shaped him into a tender, compassionate and dependable man. He became part of the Palmer family through his childhood friendship with his future brother-in-law, Rick, then through his marriage to Maureen. He was often described as the “favorite child” by father-in-law Dick Palmer.
Despite his professional achievements, his heart always belonged to his hometown of Macon and particularly Stanislaus Circle in the historic district of the Vineville Neighborhood Association. He helped enrich this community as a dedicated member of the Stanislaus Garden Club. He was a beloved fixture in the neighborhood, as well as surrogate father and grandfather to many.
Charles was a man of deep faith and a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Macon, where he married in 1964. These values guided his life, inspiring him to become an Elder and Sunday School leader at the church, as well as engaged in numerous civil organizations including Macon Rotary Club, Macon Jaycees and volunteer at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame
Charles' adventures took him around the globe, both for work and pleasure. He traveled extensively across the United States, Europe, South America and the Far East, always returning with captivating tales and a broader perspective on life. Despite his travels, Charles’ greatest pride and joy were his home and family.
His soulmate of 62 years Maureen Palmer McCullough, captured his heart at the age of 17, and their bond remained unbreakable. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and their love was an inspiration to many. He was a devoted husband and father, who could be counted on for anything, anytime, anywhere. He cherished his daughters, Beth and Amy, celebrated their creativity, and was especially proud of their wisdom and accomplishments. His legacy lives on through his beloved grandchildren Jen, Henry, Charley and Jozi, whom he loved above anything. Family togetherness extended to cheering on his Georgia Bulldogs between the hedges in Athens, roaming the streets of Manhattan, touring around as a local in Savannah and sailing around Newport Harbor.
In every conversation and encounter, Charles' warmth and genuine interest in others shone through with his smile. He will be remembered not only for his storytelling prowess and great jokes, but also for his unwavering dedication to his family, community and faith. He was larger than life, and his departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father Francis Charles McCullough II and mother Nan Elizabeth Bethea McCullough, and is survived by his wife of 60 years Maureen Palmer McCullough, daughters Beth McCullough Sillen (Peter), Amy Diane McCullough, sister Ellen McCullough Banks, Grandchildren Jen and Henry Sillen, Charley & Jozi Hellis, as well as his beloved brothers & sisters-in-law Richard & Connie Palmer, Diana & Jim Rogers, Margaret Pamer & Casey Fasciano and Pat Topping.
