In Memory

Don Stephanus

Don Stephanus

Don started working at Cummins even before he finished high school.  He lived on the family farm and was a constant companion and advisor to his family.  He loved bowling, skeet shooting, and playing pool.  He was relied upon by family and friends for his kindness and wisdom.   He was diagnosed with cancer in 2002 and passed away June 6, 2004.

Don was the most industrious person I have ever seen at the High School level. He was so friendly and cheerful. I have a friend in Lexington, Ky that knew Don and his brother from Cummin in Columbus. He has similar memories of Don.

Don and I had some good times the last three years before he got sick. I started shooting trap and Don was right there to help he was always helping some one. We travled to the Indiana state trap shoot and the Grand American trap shoot many times with another good friend of ours that thought of Don as part his family. Don will be missed and is missed by all that knew him.

Don was one of those special people that I don't think anybody could say any thing bad about. Not around me anyway. He was humble, helpful to anyone in need, a man of his word.

He, Don Smith, and I hired on second shift at Cummins during our senior year. We just left school at noon and went to work. The Euchre matches in the van to and from Columbus were intense. Mr Thompson wanted to expel us, but lo and behold, I believe the very next year they began to offer the DECA program. I've always hoped that we helped blaze that trail.

Don was diagnosed with and fought a lengthy battle with cancer, I'm sure in his quiet and uncomplaining manner. he succumbed to it in '04 and is sadly missed by his family and friends.
