Martin "Kunu" Lowe

MADISON - Martin Howard Lowe, age 30, passed away on Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at the UW Hospital surrounded by family and friends. His untimely death was due to a workplace accident. He was born on July 23, 1975, in Madison, the son of Truman and Nancy (Knabe) Lowe. Martin, also known as "Kunu" (Ho-Chunk meaning "first born son"), was an extraordinarily intelligent, funny and sensitive person. Though he struggled with anxiety and depression, his courageous spirit allowed him to continue to fight for what he hoped to achieve in his life. He spent much of his time on an intellectual quest to understand human nature, on a personal and scientific level. Along the way, he opened the minds of people around him by asking many difficult and thought-provoking questions. A witty observationist, he often found humor in the ironic occurrences of everyday life. His empathetic nature made him an especially loving son, brother and friend. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he focused on genetics. He is survived by his parents, Truman and Nancy (Knabe) Lowe; his sister, Tonia Lowe; his grandmother, Carolyn (Strand) Knabe; his aunts and uncles, Ray Lowe, Chloris (Anita) Lowe, Irene Keenan, Tom Knabe, Jerry (Carol) Knabe and Carol (Eddy) Knabe Sadowsky; and countless cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Martin and Mabel Lowe, and Milton "Pinto" Knabe; his uncle, Clifford Lowe; and his aunt, Arvina Thayer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at INDIAN LAKE COUNTY PARK. Approximately a 20-minute drive from Madison, the park is located in the town of Berry on Highway 19, 2.5 miles West of Highway 12. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that friends honor Martin Lowe's memory through the Martin Lowe Scholarship, which will benefit students studying genetics. Donations in the form of cheques made out to the UW Foundation with Martin Lowe Scholarship on the memo line, can be sent to the following address: University of Wisconsin Foundation, 1848 University Ave., Madison, WI 53726.

Ruben (Aka P No Lee Yo)

I was just telling one of my adult kids a story about working at Rayovac with Kunu and how much fun we had back then, on the roof top of Rayovac's corporate headquarters, hiding out from our supervisor.  And it made me wonder what he was up to now.  And here I find that he has passed on. It hit me like a wall of bricks.  I kept reading the obituary and staring at the screen.  Wishing we had stayed in touch after high school.  He was a quiet man, with a gentle and peaceful soul.  And yet he was funny and could have an intelligent conversation about various topics.  I hope to see you again my brother... but not  yet.  I still have a 7 year old I have to finish raising... so maybe in 30 years if I can stick around for her a little longer.   But someday my brother.  Some day.  Rest in Peace Kunu.
