Obituary

Guy Russell Pleasant 78 of Lansing IL, formerly of Calumet Township (Gary) IN. Guy passed away on 05/05/2020. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather & dear friend to many. He was born on June 24, 1941 in Caldwell County KY to William & Retta Mae (Jenkins). Guy grew up in Dawson Springs KY & graduated from Madisonville High School in 1959.

Guy moved to NW Indiana shortly after graduating where he secured a job at Inland Steel. Guy & his brother Bill opened B&G Citgo in the early 70’s in Black Oak (Gary) IN where he remained until he retired.

He was one of the promoters of Southlake Speedway from 1989-1993. Guy had a fascination with racecars and was involved in most aspects of the sport including sponsoring some of his favorite drivers (such as Rusty Pleasant #92 & Dick Potts #92), building these racecars as well as setting them up. Boy could he tell a story from those glory days that would have you cracking up, including their many trips to Eldora Speedway with the cars. Even as late as this racing season, he could be overheard giving his grandson Jake tips on setting up his racecar. He loved his NASCAR as well, traveling to many different tracks on the circuit on multiple occasions including Bristol, Daytona & Talladega just to name a few. You didn’t dare call him or try to talk to him on race day (unless there was a long caution, lol).

Guy also had a love for cooking with his barbecue ribs being his signature dish. If you knew him, you’ve heard a couple of his favorite phrases such as “I’m the most Pleasant Guy you’ll meet today” or “well I’ll be a mother frog jumping over a lily pad”.

These past few years, he spent way too many days either in the hospital or in rehab trying to regain his strength. When he would see someone walk by, he would yell out “help me” just so they’d turn around and come back so that he could say hi. Guy is preceded in death by his parents William & Retta Mae (Jenkins), his brother Bill, sister Linda (Sylvester) & his beloved dog Candymae. He is survived by his son Rusty (Jamie), his daughters Michelle (Ron) Lively & Annette (Jeff) Wright, sons Guy Jr (Nicole), & Steven & Danny Slone, grandchildren Jeffrey, Justin, Jessica, Jake, Dawn, Dana, Kiersten, Richard, Hannah Brandon, Meaghan, Taylor, Kayla, Andrew & Marissa, great-grandchildren Brayden, Landyn & Aurora, as well as his brother-in-law Louie, close friends Eugene Nelson, April Bukas & the family dog Buddy, several nieces, nephews & dear friends. In compliance with health and public safety directives and the Governor of Kentucky’s Executive Order (Covid), a private service will be held Thursday, May 14, 2020 at McGregor Cemetery near Olney, KY. A “drive through visitation and book signing” (funeral home personnel will sign for visitors) will be held in front of Beshear Funeral Home on Thursday, May 14, 2020 from 2:00 PM until 2:45 PM. (Directions for Drive by Viewing: Drive your vehicle SOUTH on North Main St., pull up in front of Beshear Funeral Home next to the curb and tent, one vehicle at a time.
