Bernie Zaccaro passed away 4/6/21. Who can forget Bernie?  Star Quarterback from Malverne High with those 60 yard bullet passes....captain of the basketball team with those memorable jump shots and double hesitation layups.  Married everyone's dream girl, Phyllis.  He was a hero to many of us.  I was glad to have visited with him when I was last in New York in 2015, traveling in our motorhome,.  We drove around the old neighborhoods and had lunch at the old Lucy's Malt Shoppe.  Lots of fun old memories to share.  He will be fondly remembered.  We'll miss him.  Now he goes on to hang out with brothers Sal, John and Joe.  R.I.P.  Bernardo!

I am posting this relayed to me by our classmate Gloria (Schwartz) Gordon:

"I found this essay written by Bernie on the Internet and thought others might like to read it."

This was a fabulous read!   An amazing journey that all of us could relate to and so much thought and effort

by Bernie to write this.

Good job Bernie

I also read his memoir, it was great.  I grew up in Lynbrook with pretty much the same memories, a little different being a girl, but it was spot on.   RIP Bernie.

Yes indeed, it was a beautiful, moving statement about growing up in Malverne, which brought back some wonderful memories.

Many thanks to Bernie: may he rest in peace.

I just read Bernie's treatise on life in Malverne.  It certainly brought back memories of my growing up in Malverne too.  Lots of memories.  I am amazed at the detail and the love woven throughout.
