Dawn died way too young in a tragic accident at Gooseberry FaIls State Park. While she was winter camping for the first time, a fire broke out in her tent, and she died of asphyxiation.
Here's a favorite memory of her.
We were good swimmers in junior high and spent the summers at Tourtelotte Pool. Her family had a small cabin on Lake Washington where we we liked to go. One day we got the bright idea to swim across the lake. Dawn had a crush on a boy from another school who lived there, so I went along with it. We had no lifejackets or floating devices for this very long swim. When I started gettting tired, I came up with a new technique. I sunk to the bottom of the lake (10 - 15 feet deep) and pushed off at an angle to propel myself forward. Dawn joined me because it broke up the monotony.
When we got to the other side, the boy she was looking for wasn't around and now we had to swim back. We were completely exhausted, so when a pontoon boat came by, so we stuck out our thumbs. To our delight, they loaded us onto two inner tubes and pulled us back across the lake.
This memory gives me nightmares, because a few years later I became a lifeguard.
After high school. Dawn attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis and became a Registered Nurse specializing in premature infants. If you knew the obstacles she surmounted to achieve her goals, you would be in awe!
Dawn also attended Nursing College in Rochester, MN. Dawn told me about a time where she would roller skate to school and the hospital in Rochester. Her Supervisor told her she could NOT! do that because it did not represent their image of what they were expecting her to display. So, did Dawn stop roller skating to work and school? NOPE! she kept right on skating. She said it didn't hurt anybody, she could get there faster and it was good excercise. WOW! what a change from todays world.
Miss you girlfriend. Wish you were only a phone call away.
